Quite recently, 20-25 years ago, in the era of the beginning of the heyday of computer technology, people working on the first PCs in the Windows OS had fun in their own way. These were entertainments, such as Screenmates, simple screen inhabitants, virtual assistants and just elements for fooling around. Jokes and pranks were especially popular. For example, the program for shooting the desktop Desktop Toys and not only was mega-popular. We’ll talk about this below.

In the 90s and 2000s, many joke programs for the Windows desktop were developed to entertain users and add an element of surprise and humor. Here are some of them:

  • BonziBuddy: A purple monkey that provided information, told jokes, sang songs, and performed other entertaining functions. However, it was later found to be spyware with a built-in virus.
  • Johnny Castaway: An animated screensaver showing the funny and cheerful adventures of a character named Johnny on a desert island. The Internet is still full of videos with animations of this character getting into funny stories. You can watch all these scenes for a long time, like an animated film!
  • Fake Error Messages:Programs that allow you to create fake (fake) Windows event error messages to play pranks on friends and colleagues.
  • Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Screensaver: A screensaver that imitates the famous blue screen of death of Windows to scare users, making them think that the computer is broken.

There were many such programs, but here we will specifically touch on the joke program Desktop Toys, which was quite popular in those years. It can be attributed to an element of the collection of digital rarities that gradually disappear over time and become a great rarity.

This is a program developed for old versions of Windows back in the 90s. However, although it is not supported, it is easy to launch and works on Windows 10 and 11 without compatibility modes at the time of this review. This joke program imitates animated objects, toys and characters that can be controlled with mouse keys and a cursor. In the middle of the launch, you will see a box of toys on the screen, from which they will start falling out around. You can use them and play with them. Here are some of them.

  • For example, these are several types of weapons, including a machine gun, a flamethrower or a shotgun. You can shoot at shortcuts, windows and other elements of the desktop.
  • Also, these are various heroes: Foton, Theodore Thumb and the desktop painter. Moreover, each of them has unique abilities and is also controlled by the mouse.
  • These are various objects: A spring on which fried chicken and other things will fall. The task is simple. You need to catch and bounce everything that falls. An eraser that can erase the entire screen, including shortcuts, inscriptions, etc. With a hammer, you can smash everything around, creating cracks that imitate glass. It’s a lot of fun!

It’s very easy to exit the program! Press the “Esc” key twice and the application will close.

Please note that Desktop Toys is indeed a very old digital development, which has not been supported for a long time. And yet, fans and collectors of old programs keep it on their resources. In particular, the program is posted in the web archive. And the download links are given below. Download the archive, unzip it and run it on your PC.
