Matrix Screensaver for Windows 10/11: Download and Install in 1 Minute

At one time, the cult science fiction film “The Matrix” amazed many of us and made us think about the reality of our present world. The style and visual techniques of the film sank into the souls of many future fans. Do you all remember the falling green symbols on the monitor screen? The developers decided to make this screen as a screensaver. The Matrix screensaver for Windows is still valued by fans of the film. And by the way, you can download and install it in 1 minute. You will learn about it below.

Matrix Screensaver on your desktop

Matrix ScreenSaver repeats the signature “green rain” from the cult film, remaining one of the lightest (≈ 185 KB) and completely free screensavers for Windows. The code is open under the GPL-3.0 license, there are no ads or miners.

Important: the project is no longer being developed (the last release was v1.4 on September 12, 2018) and there are no updates on the official website. It is safer to download only from GitHub.

Where is it safe to download

Once upon a time, screensavers saved CRT monitors from burning out, but today they play more of a decorative role. However, “digital rain” helps to hide confidential information left on the screen, and at the same time practically does not load the system: Matrix ScreenSaver works on top of any discrete and integrated GPU, so it is suitable even for office mini-PCs. Now about downloading files:

  1. Open the releases page on GitHub. You will find the links below under the corresponding tab.
  2. Download the archive matrix-v1.4.zip or the file Matrix.scr — this is the latest stable version.
  3. If necessary, check the SHA-256: hashes are indicated next to the release.

Installation in 1 minute (Windows 10 and 11)

  1. Unzip .zip to any folder.
  2. Double-click Matrix.scr — the settings window will open screensavers.
  3. Click “Install” or “Install” → “OK”.
  4. If the window does not appear: right-click on Matrix.scrInstall.
  5. Go to Settings → Personalization → Lock screen → Screensaver options, select Matrix Screensaver and click “Apply”.

Removal: in the same list, select “No” or delete Matrix.scr from C:\Windows\System32.

Fine tuning

  • Open matrix.ini (created next to .scr).
  • Speed = 10–60 — code flow speed.
  • RandomizeColor = 1 — random shades of green.
  • FontSize = 16 — character size.
  • Esc — instant exit (on/off in v1.4 settings).

Frequently asked questions

QuestionAnswer
Will there be updates? No. The project was abandoned after v1.4 (2018).
Does it work on multiple monitors?Yes, support was added in v1.4.
How “heavy” is the screensaver?<1% CPU and minimum memory; suitable even for weak laptops.

If you want to experiment, there are alternatives like Animated Screensaver Maker or the open-source OpenSCREENSAVER engine, where you can combine 3D effects and interactivity. However, such solutions entail DirectX or .NET libraries and weigh hundreds of megabytes, while the classic “Matrix” fits on a floppy disk and runs without dependencies.
