Good old games on PC

Remember those very evenings when you waited with bated breath for Monkey Island to load, and laughed at the crazy dialogues of Day of the Tentacle? Then you probably missed the unique spirit of classic adventure games. Fortunately, bringing back this feeling is easier than it seems. And you don’t need to resurrect an old PC with Windows 95. All you need is ScummVM.

ScummVM Old Game Emulator

ScummVM is not exactly an emulator in the usual sense. This is a software environment that allows you to run old games created on SCUMM, AGI, SCI and other engines on modern operating systems: Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and even consoles.

The name stands for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion Virtual Machine — yes, that same Maniac Mansion with neon hair and aliens in the basement.

ScummVM does not recreate old hardware — instead, it reads game data and runs it in its own interpretive environment. This provides high stability, wide compatibility and excellent performance.

Classic games that can be launched via ScummVM

Here is a list of cult games that are already supported by ScummVM – and this is far from all that it can do:

  • The Secret of Monkey Island is a legendary pirate adventure with signature humor.
  • Day of the Tentacle is time travel, a talking tentacle, and a completely crazy plot.
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantisgame, which many consider the best Indiana movie… that was never made.
  • Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars is an atmospheric investigation in the spirit of The Da Vinci Code, before it became mainstream.
  • Simon the Sorcerer is a British fantasy satire full of magic and sarcasm.
  • Full Throttle is bikers, adventures and a great rock soundtrack.
  • Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is mysticism, voodoo and noir in one bottle.

A full list of supported games can be found on the official ScummVM website, and it is updated regularly.

Why do developers claim that ScummVM is not an emulator?

ScummVM is often mistakenly called an emulator, but the developers specifically emphasize: this is not an emulator in the classic sense.

Regular emulators simulate the behavior of old hardware (for example, a processor, video card) to make games work in their original form. ScummVM does it differently: it replaces the game engine, reads the original game files and “translates” them into a modern language – literally, interpreting the game logic like a modern translator.

This approach makes ScummVM a lighter, more stable and convenient solution for running classics.
