QuickLook — Quick File Preview in Windows 10/11 by Space (Free Download, Plugins and Settings)

QuickLook for Windows is a free tool that adds the familiar “space preview” from macOS to Explorer. Select a file, press Space — and immediately see the contents without opening the program. Works with documents, images, videos, archives and dozens of other formats, and support can be expanded with plugins.

What is it and who can benefit from it

QuickLook — “view without opening” right in Explorer. Useful for anyone who works with files every day: designers, editors, developers, accountants, content managers. It takes a split second to understand if it’s the right file without loading Word, Photoshop, media player, etc.

Key Features

  • Preview by Space; close by Space or Esc; open in application — Enter.
  • Support for many formats out of the box: images (including RAW), PDF/AI, video/audio, HTML, CSV/JSON, EML/MSG, Markdown, etc.
  • Navigate between files with arrows when preview is open, zoom with wheel (images) and Ctrl+wheel (PDF).
  • Extension of formats via plugins: Office, CAD, Lottie, Jupyter, torrents, EPUB/DjVu via a bundle with SumatraPDF and others.
  • Work in third-party file managers (see Wiki), HiDPI support, touchscreen control.

See README (hotkeys) and Wiki (formats/plugins) in the repository.

How to download and install (safely)

  1. Download the stable version from the releases page (MSI or ZIP), or install from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Recommended option – MSI (full functionality, including preview in the “Open/Save” dialogs). Portable build (ZIP/7z) does not require installation, but before unpacking remove the file lock (Properties → Allow). Store version updates automatically, but with restrictions.
  3. Run QuickLook. If desired, enable autorun (tray icon → “Run at startup”).

First launch and basic settings

  • Run the application — and that’s it: the combination Space already works in Explorer. Hot keys are fixed in the application and cannot be reassigned via the GUI.
  • To disable autoload, uncheck “Run at startup” in the QuickLook icon menu (in the tray).
  • Data and cache: for MSI — %APPDATA%\pooi.moe\QuickLook\, for portable (since v3.6.10) — subfolder UserData next to the executable file, for Store — its own sandbox.

Practical scenarios

  • Downloads parsing: quickly scroll through PDF, DOCX, ZIP, JPG and immediately delete unnecessary things.
  • Photo selection: compare frames with arrows, scale with the wheel without opening the editor.
  • Video and subtitles: check the video fragment and .srt compliance in seconds.
  • Office documents: add the OfficeViewer plugin — and view DOCX/XLSX/PPTX without launching the office suite (or using installed components).
  • Code and markup: see JSON/YAML/Markdown with backlighting, mind-map/Diagram layouts — via corresponding plugins.

Tips and advanced features

  • Plugins in 2 clicks: download the .qlplugin file, select it and press Space — the «Install» button will appear. Restart QuickLook. Removal — via the data folder.
  • Portable «clean» mode: use the ZIP assembly to leave no traces in the system; user data is stored in the UserData subfolder.
  • Hot keys: Space — show/hide; Esc — hide; Enter — open; wheel — zoom (images), Ctrl+wheel — zoom for PDF.
  • Preview in third-party managers: useful instructions are in the Wiki for Total Commander, XYplorer, etc.

Limitations and nuances

  • Store assembly cannot show selected files in the “Open/Save” dialogs, and is not supported in Windows 10 S. For maximum capabilities, install MSI.
  • Format support depends on the codecs/engines in the system (for example, some videos require an installed codec).
  • Compatibility with Windows 7/8: official materials are oriented towards Windows 10/11; some directories indicate compatibility with older OS versions — use at your own risk.
  • Privacy: the project publishes PRIVACY.md; the application works offline, stores data locally (see paths above).

Alternatives and when to choose another

  • Microsoft PowerToys — Peek (Ctrl+Space): a built-in alternative from Microsoft, opens quickly and supports popular formats. If you already use PowerToys, you may not need a separate QuickLook.
  • Quick Eye from the Store: similar tasks, but different functionality.
  • When to choose QuickLook: you need a preview specifically by Space, a wide format base and expansion via plugins; maximum capabilities without Store limitations.

System requirements

  • Windows 10 (version 14316 and above) or Windows 11; PC with keyboard (for space).
  • Available assemblies: MSI (installer), ZIP/7z (portable), Microsoft Store (APPX).

FAQ

How to use QuickLook?

Launch the application → select the file → press Space. Pressing Space or Esc again will close the preview window; Enter will open the file in the native program.

Where can I download plugins and how to install them?

The list and instructions are on the Available Plugins page. Download .qlplugin, select it and press Space → «Install». Restart QuickLook.

QuickLook “doesn’t work with space” – what to do?

Check if QuickLook is running (tray icon). If it conflicts with other “key interception” software, temporarily disable that software and restart QuickLook; when installing from the Store, make sure you are using Windows Explorer (for third-party managers, see Wiki).

Is it possible to change the Space key to another one?

There is no graphical reassignment setting; “space” is the main hotkey.

Bottom Line. If you need a quick “spacebar preview” in Windows, QuickLook is a great choice: free, multi-format, and plugin-extendable. Install MSI for full functionality, add the plugins you need — and save minutes every hour.
